Many families in Hawaii are experiencing difficulty paying their mortgage and are not sure what their options are or who they can trust for help and advice. The Hawaii HomeOwnership Center is a HUD approved counseling agency that provides foreclosure prevention counseling at no charge.

	A study by the Urban Institute found that homeowners counseled by non-profit agencies like the Center who are contracted under the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling program "are 60 percent more likely to avoid foreclosure and have their mortgage payments lowered significantly than borrowers who navigate the process themselves."
